Community Based Environmental Monitoring Network

What does the Environmental Monitoring Network do?

First and foremost, we offer assistance in the following areas:

  • We assist individuals, community groups and other organizations in the initiation of environmental monitoring;
  • We conduct suspended sediment analysis, water quality testing, stream health assessments, forest research, etc.;
  • We lend out equipment through the Environmental Stewardship Equipment Bank;
  • We provide a place for groups to assist others and area network for the environmental stewardship community in Atlantic Canada;
  • We offer information about environmental monitoring protocols, and;
  • We offer long-term support for individuals, community groups and other organizations in their attempts to document a perceived environmental problem or threat.

*Call for Participants*

A Master's thesis study will be conducted this summer as a part of CURA H2O research, which will examine the accuracy of volunteer water quality data. No previous training or experience required. Any interested individuals who are a members of a community group who would wish to participate in this study please contact Ashley Shelton at environmental.network@smu.ca.

A new video has been created for the CBEMN, developed by Saint Mary's University student, Cory Blanchard. This video explores some of the local environmental groups working with the CBEMN, and the role that the Network plays in each groups monitoring efforts. Click here to watch.

The Network office will be open full-time during the 2012 Summer monitoring season beginning May 7th. If you need equipment from the Equipment Bank for specific dates, it is recommended that you email your request with as much advance as possible. Equipment pickup and dropoff is by appointment only, and a minimum of two weeks is recommended for pickup. This will greatly increase the likliehood that the equipment will be available for the dates requested. Explore Canada's ocean watersheds. The Canadian Geographic Interactive Watershed Map has been created and any interested watershed groups who would like to be included on their list of Involved Organizations can visit their website.

Resources:

Water Quality Guidelines-This quick reference guide has been compiled based on guidelines established by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. It is intended for stewardship groups for the purpose of referencing monitoring data and to recognize any areas of potential concern. This document is also available in the 'Resources' section of this website.

"ScienceForCitizens.net will bring together the millions of citizen scientists in the world; the thousands of potential projects offered by researchers, organizations, and companies; and the resources, products, and services that enable citizens to pursue and enjoy these activities."

An Online Resource for Tree Identification
The Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources has launched a new website which presents a virtual tour of 30 commercial Nova Scotia tree species. A catalogue is available on this website in the hopes for "better forestry management and a keener appreciation of the natural world" (Louis Legge, The Chronicle Herald, March 2, 2008).

Media Release: Saint Mary's University researcher to help communities protect watersheds

The following is an excerpt: "Together, Saint Mary's University and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design will develop a water quality monitoring tool-kit that will be field-tested by members of environmental community groups and accepted by relevant federal and provincial government agencies."
